Why should I take a GentleBirth workshop with Melanie?
The GentleBirth workshop has all the information you need to prepare for a positive birth experience – with or without an epidural. After the workshop, attendees feel calm and confident and look forward to the birth of their baby – in fact, often they find that they just can’t wait for labour to start! The workshop provides you with a roadmap for your positive birth. Most first timers are confused about the Irish maternity care system and where their expectations for a positive birth experience fit in. During the workshop, you’ll gain the benefit of my experience in navigating the system and will learn how to make it work for you.
Labour and birth are a mental and physical challenge, and just as you wouldn’t turn up to the start of a marathon without training first, you need to prepare to get the most out of the big day. Over the weekend,I will show you a host of different tools that you can use during labour, and hypnosis is just one of those. GentleBirth workshops combine brain training for birth ( including sports psychology, mindfulness and hypnosis) ,active birthing principles and information about the maternity care system to enable you to have an empowered, confident birth experience with or without medical intervention, at home or at the hospital.
A key feature of GentleBirth workshops is the importance we place on the role of the birth partner. While partners are often left feeling sidelined by hospital classes and are not expected to be fully involved, GentleBirth partners are informed about birth and how to navigate the hospital system, and are armed with a toolkit of comfort measures, so that they are fully prepared to be an effective birth supporter, facilitator and advocate on their baby’s birthday. Your birth partner may be your life partner or a friend, family member or doula – whichever, they’ll be prepared to support you fully once they’ve completed the workshop.

Fear vs relaxation during birth
Sports psychology techniques for pregnancy and birth
The neuroscience of a gentle birth – rewiring your brain from fear to confidence
Facilitating the perfect balance of hormones in labour – undisturbed birth
Hypnosis for birth
Comfort measures for labour and birth (what you and your partner can do at each stage)
Use of the birth ball and other tools in labour (including waterbirth)
Bonding with your baby before birth
Routine procedures in Irish hospitals and how to avoid unnecessary interventions
What happens on admission to hospital?
Being a confident birth partner
Labour support tools for special circumstances
Creating an effective birth priority list and how to communicate your intentions and preferences
Informed decision making
Relaxation techniques for women and partners for pregnancy and labour
Protecting your baby and your body during the 2nd stage (pushing stage).
The workshop gives you a weekend together to focus on your baby and plan for one of the biggest days of your life. You’ll also have the opportunity to chat with other couples who are preparing for a positive birth experience and start your immersion in our culture of positive birth. After the weekend, you’ll be excited about the birth and ready for whatever comes your way on the day!

I was very nervous about letting my partner be involved in a gentle birth, and how he'd approach the workshop. Needn't have worried a bit. It's only through the workshop that he is totally on board, had a brilliant weekend and he left on Sunday (as did I) gushing about what an amazing birth we are going to have together. I knew I'd love it, but I hadn't expected him to love it to the full extent he did. It's only through Melanie's teaching that that happened. It was a wonderful weekend. Enjoyed every minute of it and am so excited now about labour, delivery and babymoon! I highly recommend it. One of the best things for me personally about it was having the other half enter my world for a bit. Despite my telling him things and trying to describe my views and even with him "on side" and all, it wasn't until he immersed himself this weekend that he really understands now why I am opting to do things the way that I am. He's looking at me with a new found respect and love and I am thrilled at his skills at calming me with the hypnosis exercises. An amazing teacher, and an incredible weekend - thank you!!

I've been meaning to email you all week to say just how great we found the weekend! It gave us a chance to talk about loads of stuff that probably wouldn't have even occurred to us. It was just so empowering for both of us and we can't wait for the big day now. And that's saying a lot because before I was pregnant I had a terrible fear of pregnancy and childbirth, so I never dreamed that I would ever be looking forward to giving birth 🙂
